6. The Talented Artist from England Is 41 Years Old
Damien Valentine celebrates his birthday every 4th of October; he was born on that day in 1983 which means he is currently 41 years old.
As you would easily find, he is a Brit born in the United Kingdom. Nevertheless, his exact place of birth is yet to be confirmed just as details about his family background and early life are hard to come by.
At a young age, since the early 1990s, Damien Valentine started trying out his skills with modding video games and using machinima, which refers to the use of videogame engines to create animations.
Growing up as a teenager in the 90s, he was exposed to the early days of the internet and witnessed how people took advantage of the platform for their creative expressions, from gaming mods to writing and also making films. Inspired by all this, Damien conceived a desire of his own to tell stories.
5. Damien Valentine Gained Mainstream Recognition as an Animator
With so much talent, Damien had ideas in his early life but was not exempted from the usual challenge that comes with being a creative director from the onset. It’s one thing to be a creative performer, pretty much just needing to find a director or team that believes in your abilities enough to bring you in their fold.
It’s somewhat different when you’re the one with the idea who needs to pull other resources together—as a greenhorn, and this was something Damien couldn’t yet afford at the time. In his own words in an interview with Renderosity magazine, he said:
“I had an idea for a Star Wars fan film, but I didn’t have a camera and even if I did, I didn’t know anyone willing to get in front of it.”
With this conclusion in mind he set his sights instead, on animation, and to friends that lived far away from him enough to make meeting together practically impossible, but willing to offer their voices while he crafted his story with 2D animation. A while after that he sought to advance his craft with better tools, which led him to discover machinima, and as a result, 3D animation.
Since then Damien Valentine has moved on to be a recognized and well-appreciated figure with his all-out creativity and passion to tell a story, which set him apart from many indie filmmakers. He founded his production company Bathtub Productions, through which he’s produced a ton of projects, including the vampire series Consanguinity, and the well-known four-part Star Wars, The Darkness Saga.
In 2008 he began working on his original series called The Chronicles of Humanity.
4. Star Trek and Buffy are Part of His Early Creative Influences
Damien Valentine grew up watching Babylon 5—a futuristic space opera 90s series, Star Trek, Star Wars (apparently), and Buffy among others. These stories ignited his story-telling muse, and are part of the influences that shaped his works. Buffy’s influence can be seen in his vampire series Consanguinity which he first produced using machinima in 2004.
He’s also attested to being a fan of the Star Wars tie-in novel, Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zahn. It was published in 1991 when the Star Wars franchise was in a slump in popularity and was written to be a sequel to the original three movies.
At a later point, Damien decided to adapt the first chapter of the book as an animated short story, as a way of testing some of his ideas, refining and improving his skills. He posted it on YouTube and received very positive feedback and reactions that spurred him to adapt more chapters from the book.
3. He Is also a Fine Voice-actor
Starting his animated filmmaking projects, it was largely a one-man endeavor. Remember the limitations in getting other performers to work with him on his film ideas was what turned him to animation in the first place, so the venture had oftentimes seen him playing multiple roles in conceptualizing, designing, editing, acting, as well as creating sound effects.
In his 2007 fan film The Death of Jar Jar, he played the role of Worf which he reprised in Star Wars: Darkness Unleashed (2007) and Star Wars: A Galaxy in Darkness (2009).
More so, he voiced the character Agent in his original series, Chronicles of Humanity; Galak Dor/Emperor Palpatine/Rukh/Stormtrooper in Star Wars: The Imperials, and up to 8 characters by himself in his adaptation series of Star Wars: Heir to the Empire.
2. Damien Valentine Is Essentially a Patron Saint of Cats…
…or we might say, of the ones in his neighborhood at least.
He doesn’t appear to own any himself and has once revealed that he’s allergic to them. This does not, however, stop the special bond between him and the cats that always come by his residence to visit, and this is obvious from his several posts and photos of them on his socials.
Perhaps it’s the prospect of being fed that draws them, or he’s just a catty-good fellow (see what we did there?) or something else that only the cats themselves know about. But if you’re any bit a cat lover, you’ll enjoy the pictures of them on his Instagram, especially when accompanied with the sometimes hilarious captions.
One other thing he enjoys is the painting of 3D miniatures that he actualizes with his 3D printer and then paints on.
5. The Animator Is One of the Organizers of the Annual Machinima Expo
The Machinima Expo is a virtual film festival set up for the appreciation of Machinima and the art of 3D animation. It is a non-profit online event that takes place every year in November. It is constituted by volunteers from several parts of the world who work to share and promote the art of machinima, acknowledging and recognizing the best in the craft by presenting films, machinima-related programming, interviews, and awards.
The idea is to promote the finest of its produced films from all over the world and serve as a meeting platform for the community of animators. Already a standout name in the industry, it is no surprise that Damien Valentine is one of the key organizers of the annual event.
